Help the Institute

We Need Your Help!

Volunteer

We've been told that we do a lot of work with a small staff. Our secret?-the assistance of committed activists like you. We have an ongoing need for volunteers who can donate time and talent to the work of the Institute.

We need:

  • Adult education tutors and teacher assistants;
  • Assistance with fund raising and special events;
  • Contributions to our newsletter and web page;
  • Office workers;
  • Teacher assistants for our computer classes;
  • Video taping and editing for Labor Vision;
  • Workshop teachers for our Labor Education Program.

If you can help, please give us a call at 401-463-9900 or e-mail us.

Join the RI Workforce Literacy & Education Project

In 2004 the Institute created the RI Workforce Literacy & Education Project to raise money to support our adult literacy programs. Currently we are running three programs that are supported by these funds.

Workplace Adult Education

The Workplace Adult Education Project was established in 1987 to develop workplace-based adult education courses. The courses have included English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED, Spanish for Your Job, Applied Math, Study Skills, Laboratory Applications (Math), Computer Basics, and customized work-specific programs. The project receives funding for the ESL, ABE and GED classes from the Rhode Island Department of Education. In addition, significant financial and in-kind contributions are made by sponsoring employers and unions.

Mobile Education Center

In September 2005, the Institute began offering classes at its new Mobile Education Center . This classroom on wheels is equipped with 12 computerized workstations in a small fully functional classroom. Teachers provide literacy services such as pre GED, ESL, computer literacy and worksite instruction. A job counselor provides interpreting services, employment and education counseling, and referral and social service support.

HomeGoods Retraining Program

Over 400 workers were laid off from the HomeGoods warehouse in Mansfield, MA in 2005. The Institute is conducting 6 ESL classes and job development for these laid-off workers.
